Localisation of Elevated Sources in Higher-Order Ambisonics

چکیده
Increasing the order of ambisonic reproduction allows 3D sound fields to be reconstructed with improved resolution and enhanced localisation, at the expense of higher channel counts, increased broadcast bandwidth, and increased storage requirements. Due to the resolution of human hearing it is possible that lowerorder reproduction is sufficient for elevated sources in comparison to sources located in the horizontal plane, and so for 3D reproduction mixed-order ambisonic renderings may be the most efficient use of available transmission bandwidth and storage capacity. We report the results of subjective localisation tests for virtual sources placed in the vertical plane at various elevations and azimuths, for first, second and third-order ambisonic reproduction over a 16-loudspeaker system. The results provide insights into the requirements of higher-order ambisonics for broadcast and domestic reproduction. Investigation on Localisation Accuracy for First and Higher Order Ambisonics Reproduced Sound Sources
Ambisonics and higher order ambisonics (HOA) technologies aim at reproducing sound field either synthesised or previously recorded with dedicated microphones. Based on a spherical harmonic decomposition, the sound field is more precisely described when higher-order components are used. The presented study evaluated the sound field reproduced with four microphones of order one to four, perceptiv...
متن کاملUsing Vbap-derived Panning Functions for 3d Ambisonics Decoding
In this contribution we will explain the derivation of panning functions from the vector base amplitude panning (VBAP) technology for 3-dimensional Ambisonics decoding. VBAP turned out to be a robust method for presenting virtual acoustic sources. Each virtual source to be played back using VBAP has to be described by a monophonic signal and a 3-dimensional position as parameter. In opposite to...
متن کاملImplementing Ambisonics on a 48 Channel Circular Loudspeaker Array
This contribution describes an implementation of near field coding higher order Ambisonics on an existing circular array of 48 loudspeakers. Static and moving sources can be reproduced with a variable Ambisonics order and variable number of loudspeakers. Informal listening tests were performed to evaluate the influence of Ambisonics order and loudspeaker number on the perception quality and loc...
متن کاملComparison of Higher-Order Ambisonics, Vector- and Distance-Based Amplitude Panning using a hearing device beamformer
The main advantages and drawbacks of Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) versus Vector-Based Amplitude Panning (VBAP) for 3D audio sound reproduction are well documented. However, few studies focused on the effect of 3D audio reproduction artifacts and errors on the behaviour of hearing devices. This study compares the effect of HOA, VBAP, and Distance-Based Amplitude Panning (DBAP) sound reproductio...
متن کاملRendering of virtual sound sources with arbitrary directivity in higher order Ambisonics
Higher order Ambisonics (HOA) is a spatial audio reproduction technique aiming at physically synthesizing a desired sound field. It is based on the expansion of sound fields into orthogonal basis functions (spatial harmonics). In this paper we present an approach to the two-dimensional reproduction of virtual sound sources at arbitrary positions having arbitrary radiation directivities. The app...
